TO A FRIEND WHO OPENED HIS HEART

Thank you for opening your heart.
Thank you for telling me who your father was.
In truth, I already knew,
From talking to him at the ice rink, and
From how you and your brother turned out.
People don’t turn out like that without a father who is
Wise and thoughtful, patient and generous.
He should have lived longer,
As his Greek immigrant parents did.
He should have met a great-grandchild,
As his mother did.
He should have been surrounded by family,
He should have died when that was allowed.
He should have died when funerals were allowed,
Hundreds would have gathered.
I was not surprised to learn he served his country,
I was not surprised to learn he was a family doctor
For fifty years,
I was not surprised to learn he was still working
In his eighties.
Thank you for opening your heart,
Thank you for telling me his story.
I will keep it in my heart.
