Recommended Reading, Sept. 2010

INVENTING THE ISRAELITE— Dr. Maurice Samuels, Yale University professor in French literature.  This book won the MLA’s top prize in French studies in 2009.  Great look at 19th-century France, and the social and governmental response to the emergence of Jewish art, culture & identity.

BROKEN SUMMERS — Henry Rollins.  I’ve never listened to any of his music, but I enjoy his writing.  I loved his first book, Get in the Van (1994), about his entry into the band Black Flag and his life on the road with them.  And now I’m enjoying Broken Summers (2003), too, which again details a road tour but also discusses the legal case of the West Memphis 3, who appear to have been wrongfully convicted for murder.
